As the Los Angeles area grapples with some of the most destructive wildfires in its history, a prominent artificial intelligence researcher at Nvidia has sparked controversy by suggesting that humanoid robots powered by AI could be deployed to fight such blazes. The remark, made on social media, came as the region faced unprecedented fire conditions, and it has drawn sharp criticism from observers who point to the technology sector's own growing environmental toll.
Jim Fan, who leads Nvidia's embodied AI research, posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing a humanoid robot walking down a street in China. After praising the robot's style, Fan wrote that such machines need "to go fire-fighting asap!" The post was made during the week that wildfires devastated parts of Los Angeles, including the community of Altadena, where entire neighborhoods were reduced to ashes.
The suggestion was met with immediate backlash, with many noting the irony of proposing AI as a solution to a crisis that the technology itself is helping to worsen. The criticism was amplified by the fact that Nvidia was, at the same time, showcasing energy-intensive AI products at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, a five-hour drive from the fire-ravaged city.
At CES, Nvidia demonstrated its "Neural Faces" technology, which uses generative AI to alter video game characters' facial expressions in real time. The company touted the feature as a way to "cross the uncanny valley," but critics, including gaming site Aftermath, pointed out that such applications consume vast amounts of electricity and water—resources that are directly tied to the environmental conditions exacerbating wildfires.
"It's one thing if LA weren't literally on fire," Aftermath noted, "but for the company to boast about energy-intensive crap that nobody wants while people lose their homes and lives just one state over feels beyond the pale."
The environmental impact of AI is not just a matter of perception. A recent paper from researchers at the University of California, Riverside and Caltech—which is located just a few miles from the fire-leveled town of Altadena—details how AI is already contributing to rising carbon emissions and water consumption. The paper, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, focuses on AI's effects on public health, but it adds to a growing body of evidence that the technology is becoming a significant environmental burden.
Data centers, which power AI models, require massive amounts of electricity and water for cooling. As AI models grow larger and more complex, their energy and water demands are expected to increase dramatically. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, for instance, is reportedly seeking trillions of dollars in infrastructure investment to support the AI industry's expansion.
For every well-intentioned researcher like Fan, there are many others looking to profit from AI applications that offer little societal value while carrying a hefty environmental price tag. The situation has led some to draw parallels between the AI industry and fossil fuel companies that sell carbon offsets to mitigate their emissions—a practice that critics argue is more about public relations than genuine environmental action.
While AI is not the primary cause of the current wildfires, its growing environmental footprint is becoming harder to ignore. If the industry continues to expand at its current pace, experts warn that the planet will face even more severe climate impacts, including more frequent and intense fires.
The debate over AI's role in climate change is likely to intensify as the technology becomes more integrated into daily life. For now, the suggestion that AI-powered robots could fight fires serves as a stark reminder of the industry's dual role: as both a contributor to and potential mitigator of environmental crises.
