Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp went down Tuesday morning in a widespread outage that also appeared to affect several Google services, including YouTube, according to Downdetector. The disruption began around 10 a.m. Eastern, the New York Times reported.
Users encountered errors while trying to log in or out. "Something went wrong," one error message read. "Please try again." Variety reported the login and logout failures.
"We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services," Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a tweet. "We are working on this now."
The cause remained unclear. The number of services involved—spanning Meta's platforms and Google's YouTube—pointed to a large-scale infrastructure failure rather than an isolated app problem, though no company confirmed that assessment.
Timing and Regulatory Context
The outage coincided with a deadline for tech giants including Meta, Apple and Google to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, which fell the following day. It was not clear whether the two events were connected, the Times noted.
By the time of reporting, the services appeared to be coming back online. Meta did not provide a timeline for full restoration or an explanation of what triggered the failure.
